This code of practice was drafted as a response to concern about the loss of ships carrying solid bulk cargoes, sometimes without a trace, and the heavy loss of life incurred, as a result of improper loading and unloading. It was approved by the Maritime Safety Committee in 1997 and then by the Assembly later that year. It provides guidance to ship masters of bulk carriers, terminal operators and other parties concerned for the safe handling, loading and unloading of solid bulk cargoes.
